What are the benefits of franchising?

Starting up a business is exciting but it can also be a little scary! However, by operating as a ‘franchise business’ with the support of an experienced ‘franchisor’, you may find that some of the more daunting aspects of being a business owner are made a little easier.  These might include things like:

  1. The peace of mind to know that your business can work
  2. Having the confidence to know that you are operating ethically – assuming that the Franchisor is a FULL member of the British Franchise Association (bfa) then you are guaranteed to be working with a franchisor that operates ethically.  This also means they have a model that has been tried and tested, is workable and can make profits
  3. Being able to access the right advice to make your business grow -  an ethical franchisor will ensure that they have enough resources to support all of their franchisees - rather like having business advisors and specialists on tap for free. You shouldn’t feel alone!

And additionally, a franchisor provides you with a vast array of different things that are relevant to each stage of your business as it grows – right from the launch to an established going concern - such as national marketing campaigns, brand identity, ready made marketing material, your own web page, core product and services, customer database, legal framework etc.  These ‘business support tools’ take away a large proportion of the work in which a stand-alone business has to invest.

For more detailed information about the franchising sector please download our ‘free franchise report’.

How many

years have you owned a Monkey Music franchise?

I started in September 2014.

How did you first hear about Monkey Music and the franchise opportunities available?

I was introduced to Monkey Music by my sister and her husband who run their own franchise in a neighbouring territory and it combined everything I had ever learned and loved about music with the added bonus

My week at work

Spoke to nursery head at drop-off and she invited me to run a promo session at their summer fair.  She might be interested in regular weekly sessions in September, so sent her my marketing pack.  A Skype meeting with HQ franchise support has made me very excited about my expansion plans for the coming year.  Alfie's new swim school has

a ‘dry’ area so I can work on my laptop whilst he is swimming – marvellous!

Great morning of classes – one of my Heigh-Ho toddlers took his first steps as he tried to steal Monkey from behind me!  Got some great photos at sports day – Alfie won the egg and spoon race and he was thrilled.  Paul did ‘bedtime’

Facts and figures

Now that you have a clearer picture of what is involved in becoming a Monkey Music Franchisee the burning question is probably …

‘But can I make money from running a Monkey Music franchise business?’

The answer is a resounding ‘yes’!

We have around 50 franchises operating in the UK and have regular enquiries from both the UK and overseas.  A number of our very first franchisees have recently renewed for a fourth contract period which is an indication of the satisfaction that our franchisees acheive from being part of Monkey Music.

In the last reported accounts, 98% of Monkey Music franchises that had been operating for 2 years or more reported a profit.  Of those who had been operating for only one full year, 40% were already reporting a profit.

28% of franchisees operating for 2 years or more reported sales of over £100,000.

Profits of up to 53% of turnover were reported for tax purposes in the latest filed franchisee accounts.

We continue to grow organically with an increase of 13% in average franchisee turnover reported for this last financial year.  We’ve already mentioned that average franchisee turnover has increased by 50% over the last 5 years and we see no reason for this trajectory not to continue.

This growth doesn’t occur without investment and innovation and the last five years has seen heavy investment by head office in:

  1. A new website
  2. A complete revision and extension of all marketing material
  3. Launch of customer members club with partner opportunities
  4. A curricula upgrade
  5. Appointment of new specialist HQ support team members

Franchisee Average Income Growth

Over the last 5 years the average Monkey Music franchisee turnover (sales income) has increased by 50% whilst the overall economy has shrunk by 2.5% in this period*.  This figure also compares very favourably to national British franchising statistics of just 9% growth* in average UK franchise turnover (*latest NatWest bfa Franchise Survey)

Franchisees Breaking Records

The recent winners of the Monkey Music Franchisee of the Year Awards continue to break records, with a turnover of over £200,000.

Capital Gain

A profitable Monkey Music franchise can be sold as an ongoing concern with the potential for significant gain - franchisees historically achieving up to £72,000 in sale proceeds.

Customer Growth

Year-on-year the number of children who attend our weekly classes grows, and is fast approaching 20,000 per year.

British Franchise Association

Monkey Music has been a FULL member of the bfa since 2004 and the Monkey Music directors have been keynote speakers at bfa events.

How do I apply?

You simply click here to send us your initial enquiry.  We will then get in touch with you.

What happens after I have clicked on join-the-team?

You will receive a phone call and then may be invited to complete an official application form and return it to us.  The next stage after that may be an invitation to come to Monkey Music Head Office for a preliminary, fairly informal meeting with Angie Coates, CEO and founder of Monkey Music.

How much will it all cost me?

The franchise fee that you pay to Monkey Music Ltd is £12,975 + VAT.  We do have scholarships available in some circumstances.  You will also need to consider your local working capital requirements for marketing, computer equipment, stock etc. to see you through the initial months before an income is generated.  We can offer further guidance on this when you come to meet us.

Are finance packages available for the purchase of a franchise?

Monkey Music Ltd do not offer finance packages but we can put you in touch with the franchising department of our bank who understand the Monkey Music business model.  Previous applicants have been successful in securing a personal loan this way.  Additionally your own bank may have a franchise department, and you will find that the business plan template that you prepare during the franchise application process is helpful to support your loan application.  Additionally Monkey Music HQ can supply you with detailed cashflow projection guidelines.

How long is the contract?

The initial franchise agreement is for 5 years.  This is renewable for a nominal sum at the option of the Franchisee (i.e. yourself) providing that certain criteria have been met.  These criteria are detailed in the contract, a draft of which will be given to you during the application process.

How many venues and classes am I permitted to operate?

As many as you like!

Do you need to have a musical background?

You do not need any form of formal musical education, although you will need to demonstrate an interest in music, and in particular an interest in the educational and developmental benefits of including music provision in a child’s early life.  If you wish to teach in your franchise, then you will need to have a tuneful voice that projects well, but no formal musical qualifications are necessary.

Can I be a joint franchisee with my partner/with a business partner?

It is possible to run a Monkey Music business as a joint franchisee with a partner.  We currently have, and have in the past, a variety of partnership agreements varying from husband and wife joint franchisees, one spouse franchisee with the other spouse being employed as a teacher or office manager, non-marital joint franchisees where either both teach or only one teaches, and of course many sole franchisees too.

For how many weeks a year will I run classes?

Regular weekly classes run for a minimum of 36 weeks per year, but many franchisees operate longer terms. Most franchisees also run workshops in the school holidays but there is no contractual commitment to do so.

In addition to regular weekly classes are there any other methods to generate income within the business model?

Yes - holiday workshops, nurseries, parties, ‘one-off’ events and merchandise sales all generate additional profit and your franchise fee gives you the rights to operate all of these opportunities from launch date.

I do not have any business experience – is this a problem?

Monkey Music franchisees come with a variety of prior experience, and just as a formal musical education is not necessary, neither is a track record in business.  Many people come to franchising exactly because they have no prior business experience and are looking to ‘partner’ with a team who do have a track record in business success.  Full training and support is given on the Monkey Music business model, and you will just need to demonstrate how you will manage the more ‘local’ and ‘general’ business issues that you may face, such as local IT and accounting – this may be by acknowledging the need to pay a local ‘expert’ to assist with these functions.

How do I engage teachers?

Full guidance on this is detailed in the operating manual, and you will receive training and guidance at the appropriate time.  However, briefly, it is a franchise’s local responsibility to advertise for and interview potential teachers, and then to train the candidate locally ahead of them attending a training and assessment day run by an HQ teacher trainer.

How do I advertise?

Successful candidates will meet the Marketing Manager at Monkey Music who will explain what advertising and marketing material is available etc.  All franchisees have their own personalised dedicated webpage, and will often also operate a local Monkey Music Facebook site.  Flyers, posters and adverts are tailored to each franchise territory, and full guidance is offered on how to launch the brand if you are buying a new territory.

Can I talk to your existing franchisees and observe their classes?

Yes we very much operate an ‘open door’ policy with regards to you speaking to other franchisees.  However, due to their busy schedules, please contact us first so that we can make an introduction in the first instance. As part of our commitment to ensuring that a potential franchisee has a well rounded training experience, we require all candidates to go along to at least 3 franchisees to observe their classes before training.  We further advise that you observe as many different Monkey Music teaching franchisees and teachers as are practicably possible, prior to signing your contract.

Do you only have brand new franchise territories available or are there any existing franchisees looking to sell on their franchise businesses?

From time to time existing businessess come up for sale - do contact us to find out if we have any for sale at the moment.  Also if it looks like there is already a Monkey Music franchise in your area do still contact us as the current franchisee may have plans to sell.
